How to install VGrab: from a store, or the ZIP package

Three ways: one click from the Chrome Web Store, one click from Edge Add-ons, or download the ZIP package and load it yourself. Store installs update automatically; the ZIP is for browsers that cannot reach a store.

Pick a route

VGrab is a browser extension, not an installer — it lives inside the browser. Any of the three routes gives the same result:

  • Chrome Web Store: first choice on Chrome; one click, updates automatically.
  • Edge Add-ons: first choice on Edge; one click, updates automatically.
  • ZIP package: for Brave, Vivaldi, Opera, Arc and other browsers that cannot reach a store or block the install.

Use a store whenever you can — store installs update themselves, a hand-loaded copy has to be replaced by hand.

1. Chrome Web Store

  1. On the site's home page click "Install to Chrome"; it opens VGrab's page in the Chrome Web Store.
  2. Click "Add to Chrome"; the browser shows the permissions the extension needs; click "Add extension".
  3. When the VGrab icon appears in the toolbar you are done. Reload any video page that was already open.

The permission box says "read and change all your data on all websites". That is required to find videos: their addresses are not in the page, only in the requests the player sends, so the extension has to see requests. It reads addresses, not contents, and uploads nothing — details in the privacy policy.

2. Edge Add-ons

  1. Open the home page in Edge; the button turns into "Install to Edge" by itself and leads to Edge Add-ons.
  2. Click "Get" and confirm the permissions once.
  3. The icon in the toolbar means it's installed.

Edge can also install the Chrome Web Store version: Edge asks to "allow extensions from other stores"; allow it. Both stores carry the same code.

3. The ZIP package

When you need it: Brave, Vivaldi, Opera and Arc share Chrome's engine and run Chrome extensions, but some cannot open the Chrome Web Store or block the install. Then load the package yourself, four steps:

  1. Download the package. Under the install button on the home page, click "Download the ZIP package".
  2. Unzip it. You get a folder named extension. Put it somewhere you won't delete later — the extension runs from that folder; delete it and the extension is gone.
  3. Open the extensions page and turn on Developer mode. Type chrome://extensions in the address bar (brave://extensions on Brave, vivaldi://extensions on Vivaldi, edge://extensions on Edge). Flip the "Developer mode" switch at the top right.
  4. Click "Load unpacked" and pick the extension folder from step 2. Pick the folder itself, not a file inside it.

Check that it works

Open any page with a video and press play. A number on the extension icon means it found that many videos on the page. Click the icon: the most likely film is already first with a quality chosen; press Save to download.

Common prompts and questions

"Disable developer mode extensions". The browser says this about every hand-loaded extension; it does not mean anything is wrong. Click Cancel and carry on. If the prompt on every start annoys you, use a store version.

Hand-loaded copies don't update. To upgrade, download the package again, unzip over the old folder and click the reload button on the extensions page. The release notes page lists what changed in each version.

Mobile browsers can't install it. Chromium mobile browsers generally do not support extensions — a browser limitation, not VGrab's.

Blocked on a work computer. Some companies use policy to forbid extensions or developer mode; the extensions page will say "managed by your organisation". Only your administrator can change that.

No icon after installing. Click the puzzle-piece icon at the right of the toolbar, find VGrab and pin it.

Uninstalling. Click Remove on the extensions page. The extension writes nowhere else on your computer; removing it clears everything, and downloaded videos stay in your download folder.
