Why a video download fails, and the fixes

Go down the list: no video found, refused (403), not found (404), timeout, disk full, video with no sound, rate-limited, saved as .ts, human verification — each with why it happens and something you can do right away.

First look at the icon

Before clicking the extension icon, check its corner: a number means this page already produced a video, so find your case below; no number usually means "no video found".

No video found

You click the icon and it says "no video yet". Usually the player hasn't started requesting data — press play first, let it load, then click the icon. If not, refresh and press play again. Some sites only load once you scroll to the video or click it; some put the video in an embedded frame — press play inside it. If the list holds only short clips and no film, the popup says "all short, probably no film yet"; use its "refresh and listen again".

Refused (403 / blocked)

It fetches part way then everything stops — usually the site's hotlink protection. VGrab adds the request's referer and retries, which passes in almost all cases. Still refused? Refresh and detect again — many sites' addresses expire and need a fresh one.

Human verification

A "checking your browser", "please wait" or "just a moment" page is not hotlinking — the site is confirming you're human. You need to clear that check on the page yourself, then come back and download. The extension never clicks through or disguises itself; that's a principle.

Not found (404)

One segment's address expired. VGrab skips it, keeps going, and fills it in on a second pass; anything still missing is reported honestly as "N parts missing", never faked. If a lot is missing, refresh and detect again for a fresh playlist.

Timeout / stuck

A segment hung. Every segment has a timeout and retries on its own. If the whole thing is slow with no error, the site is probably rate-limiting — VGrab backs off automatically; just wait. After ten minutes with no progress it stops and tells you; press Continue later.

Not enough disk space

It says the system drive is full. During download the pieces are kept in the browser's own storage (on the system drive) and moved to your download folder only at the end. Move large files off the system drive or clean it up, then press Continue — what's already downloaded is kept. The Unfinished list on the manage page shows how much each temp file takes, with one-click cleanup.

Video with no sound

Some sites send video and audio separately. VGrab merges them into one file with sound; when only one track is found the popup says plainly "no sound" rather than silently giving you a silent file. Refresh, let the video play a few more seconds and detect again — both tracks usually show up.

Saved as .ts instead of .mp4

In rare cases the pieces can't be put into an MP4 container; the extension saves a .ts and says why in the popup. Desktop players open .ts files fine; some phones don't — re-save or convert it with a player.

The finished file won't open

Check whether the popup marked that item "N parts missing" — a file with gaps plays but skips. A complete file that won't open is usually an old player; try another.

Still stuck

Tell us on the feedback page: which site, what happened. "Having trouble?" in the popup takes you there and shows a few self-help answers first — most people don't need the form. If you do, the report includes the address of the page you were on (a switch keeps only the domain), takes a minute to send, and we reply.

Try these three first — they fix most cases

  1. Refresh the page, press play again, click the extension icon.
  2. Click "refresh and listen again" in the popup so it detects afresh.
  3. Pick another quality and save — on some sites one level's pieces are broken while the others are fine.
